Don’t be a pawn

Pawn: (noun) a chess piece of the smallest size and value; one that can be used to further the purposes of another.
Synonyms: puppet, dupe, hostage, tool, instrument, “a pawn in the battle for the throne”

Pawn 2Most people who meet me think I’m a fitness enthusiast. Not really, it’s just a vivid dream I have that maybe one day that’d be the case if I actually did some regular exercising. Growing up, I didn’t have much self-confidence and I longed to be athletic like some of my classmates. And as you’ll recall, I’m the ignored center-child and likewise, my dream then was to be a cheerleader. Yes, I longed to be the Paul Revere of town criers (or at least football rally cries) and the Nadia Comaneci (Gabby Douglas of the 1970’s) of gymnastic form and poise.

One thing I wasn’t and still am not, is a strategist. I could never grasp or even care to grasp the concept of Chess. My favorite game was called “Aggravation”, which was a simple roll the dice, move your marbles and hope you can make it to home base before your opponent, kind of game. Chess to me, required too much thinking and I’ve always believed that too much thinkin’ wears out your brain.

That being said, with all of the protests, finger pointing, political scandals, violent physical attacks, etc. going on lately, it can seem like you can’t see the forest through the trees or figure out what game is being played and for whose benefit. I’m positive that none of what we’re witnessing is news to God, although I believe He’s deeply saddened by it all—watching His creation destroy itself and the sacrifice of His son lack relevancy to the people He loves so dearly. What I do know is that everything we see shouts that we are coming to a time where His kingdom is near.

However, to get to that end, certain scenarios and situations need to take place-none of which seem very pleasant. There are people being manipulated by an agenda that is not God-honoring or God-fearing. The enemy is using what we see around us e.g., violence, race baiting, and political corruption, etc. as weapons to bring dissension, angst and hatred to the world and among God’s own people. Similarly in the game of Chess, the enemy uses these people as pawns to do his work for him. The pawn can capture other Chess pieces in an attempt to render the opponent helpless so that he can win the game and/or take over the kingdom. Sounds kind of familiar don’t you think?

These days it’s pretty easy to open our mouths and pour out complaints, vulgar rhetoric and discontent, because of the story lines we see on the news, social media, in our own inner circles, and thus, believe them to be true. But I’m here to tell you that the narratives being spun in one direction or another that you participate in, makes you in essence, a pawn. Yes, myself included. The enemy is here to steal, kill and destroy. (John 10:10) He knows his time is coming to an end and knows who he can use and who he can’t.

So are you allowing yourself to be a pawn? If so, stop! We are children of the Most High God. We sit in the hand of the Almighty and we have His favor. Believing that frees you from the fear, upset and disgust that traverses the world around us. God has a plan for each of us and our nation, and guess what? It may not be as we want it to be. He has pre-destined and ordered our steps and that of our nation. That cannot be changed. Even though we may not understand why, we have to trust His heart. Remembering that will keep us sane in a totally insane and toxic environment. We do that by first, shutting off the TV and getting the heck off social media (that one’s a struggle for me). Second, we do that so we can get into the Word. Third,  and most importantly, we pray. Pray for those situations. Pray for protection of both your physical and emotional well-being. Pray that God’s love will prevail. Pray for salvation for those that are lost. Pray for our nation and world leaders that they be given wisdom. Pray that we can be the light in a dark world and to be able to step out boldly. Pray that we stay strong and not stumble onto the enemy’s path of destruction.

In Chess, the more pawns the enemy has to navigate the board, the closer he believes he is getting to the kingdom. But we know how the game ends. We are victors in Christ and as such, why would we allow ourselves to be used for anything less? I think it’s called “Checkmate”.

Until next time, stay chic

John 10:10 (NIV) “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

“The pawn is the soul of chess. … the Pawns. They are the very Life of the Game.
They alone form the Attack and the Defense; on their good or bad Situation depends the Gain or Loss of the Party.”
François-André Danican Philidor, 1749
